“Although the big waters of Devils Lake seem to get all the attention in the area, both Bisbee and Armourdale reservoirs boast excellent summer and winter fishing. Easy access and less fishing pressure make these great locations for family outings” http://www.candond.com/recreation/fishing.htm. Found outside the eastern boundary of North Dakota’s Turtle Mountains, a terrain where many natural lakes can be found, the Armourdale Dam provides anglers the opportunity to fish for bluegill, northern pike, walleye, and yellow perch. The water backed up from the dam creates a reservoir that is on average 13’ deep with a maximum depth of 31’. The area includes a boat ramp, fishing pier and campground.

Description

Probably a location that should not be included on a web site designed to inform people with disabilities about accessible fishing locations due to its inaccessibility, still the author thinks it is important to include all fishing piers for the public so a person with a disability can assess whether it is usable based in their individual circumstance.  Readers are asked to change the map view to “Satellite” and enlarge the map so they can see the distance one has to travel from the boat landing or from the camping area to the pier.

The road leading to the boat landing and area used for parking is rocky, and uneven with washouts, to compound this it is also hilly. The parking area has no designated accessible parking spots so visitors with a disability should park in a manner where others cannot block access to their van lift or car doors.  This is also true for users that have a car with a boat trailer that could potentially block you from getting out of the parking lot completely.  It may be a long wait until the boaters come off the water.

There is not an accessible route from either the parking area or camping area to the pier so visitors will have to navigate a trail that is not maintained and is simply a worn area in the prairie where others have traveled before.  The most accessible trail is the one from the boat landing; the camping area is very steep down an embankment to the pier.  The locations only comfort station in located in close proximity to the campground and is not accessible.  Once a person comes to the pier the threshold of the pier is not maintained so wheelchair users will have to navigate transition greater than ½ inch.  The railing of the pier has railings that are higher than present regulations but has cut outs where one can fish between.  Persons will have to bring seating with them so they are comfortable while fishing and to rest if need be while making their way to the fishing pier.
